My Favorite Scripture Study Supplies for a More Meaningful Study Routine
You don't need special supplies to have meaningful scripture study.
A set of scriptures, a quiet moment, and a willingness to learn are enough.
But I've also found that having a few favorite study tools nearby can make it easier to slow down, take notes, organize thoughts, and create a scripture study routine I genuinely enjoy.
Here are some of my favorite types of scripture study supplies—and, more importantly, how I like to use them.
1. A Scripture Study Journal
A dedicated journal is probably my favorite scripture study tool.
Use it to record:
- Scriptures that stand out
- Questions you want to explore
- Thoughts and impressions
- Favorite General Conference quotes
- Answers to prayers
- Things you want to remember
It doesn't need to become an elaborate journaling project. Sometimes a date, scripture reference, and two sentences are enough.
Over time, your journal becomes a beautiful record of what you've learned.
2. Scripture-Safe Highlighters
A good set of highlighters makes it easy to identify verses you want to find again.
You can keep it simple and use one color—or create a basic color system.
For example:
Yellow: Jesus Christ
Green: Promises and blessings
Blue: Faith and revelation
Pink: Love, family, and relationships
Don't worry about creating the perfect system. Choose something that helps you recognize important themes.
3. Pens You Actually Enjoy Using
This sounds simple, but a comfortable pen makes journaling and note-taking much more enjoyable.
I like pens that write smoothly, don't bleed heavily through thin pages, and are easy to keep with my scriptures.
Keep a few favorites in a small pencil pouch so they're always ready when it's time to study.
4. Scripture Tabs
If you regularly flip between books of scripture, tabs can be incredibly helpful.
They're especially useful for children, teenagers, new scripture readers, or anyone who wants to quickly locate different books.
And there are so many beautiful styles available now that they can add a little personality to your scriptures too.
5. A Book or Scripture Stand
This is one of those tools you may not think you need until you use one.
A small book stand can hold your scriptures open while you're writing in a journal, studying on a tablet, or comparing different passages.
It can also create a simple designated scripture-study space on a desk or nightstand.
6. Bookmarks and Scripture Cards
I love having something small that keeps a favorite scripture visible throughout the week.
Use a bookmark, scripture card, or printed verse to remind yourself of something you studied.
Place it on your desk, bathroom mirror, refrigerator, or nightstand.
It's a simple way to carry scripture study beyond the few minutes when your scriptures are open.
7. A Simple Storage Pouch or Basket
Finally, keep everything together.
Your scriptures, journal, pens, highlighters, and other supplies can live in one small basket, tote, or pouch.
Removing the little barriers matters.
When everything is ready to go, it's much easier to sit down and begin.
The Best Scripture Study Supplies Are the Ones You'll Use
You certainly don't need everything on this list.
Start with what you already have.
Then notice what would genuinely make your study easier or more meaningful.
The goal isn't to create the prettiest scripture-study setup.
The goal is to create a space and routine that helps you come closer to Jesus Christ.
