How to Get More Out of "Come, Follow Me" Each Week

Come, Follow Me is meant to help us draw closer to Jesus Christ through consistent study of the scriptures.
But some weeks, it can be difficult to know where to begin.
There may be several chapters to read, questions to consider, activities to choose from, and additional resources to explore. When life is already busy, it's easy for scripture study to start feeling like another thing we're trying to keep up with.
The good news is that Come, Follow Me doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful.
Here are a few simple ways to get more from your study each week.
1. Start With the Scripture, Not the Checklist
It's tempting to look at everything included in the week's lesson and feel like you need to cover all of it.
You don't.
Begin by opening the assigned scriptures.
Read slowly enough to notice what stands out.
You might not finish every chapter in one sitting—and that's okay.
Come, Follow Me is a guide for your study, not a checklist you have to complete.
2. Look for One Main Message
After you've read for a while, ask yourself:
What is the Lord teaching me here?
You don't need to identify every possible lesson.
Maybe this week you keep noticing faith.
Another week it might be forgiveness, obedience, prayer, covenants, or trusting God.
Finding one central idea gives you something meaningful to carry with you throughout the week.
3. Ask Better Questions
Questions can transform the way we study.
Instead of only asking:
What happened in this chapter?
Try asking:
What does this teach me about Jesus Christ?
Why might this story have been included in scripture?
What do I need to learn from this right now?
Is there something the Lord is inviting me to do?
You may be surprised at how differently you read when you're looking for answers to a question.
4. Spread Your Study Throughout the Week
You don't have to complete the entire lesson on Sunday.
In fact, Come, Follow Me can become much more meaningful when you return to it throughout the week.
For example:
Sunday: Preview the lesson.
Monday: Read part of the scripture block.
Tuesday: Continue reading.
Wednesday: Study a question or topic that stood out.
Thursday: Read or listen to a related General Conference talk.
Friday: Record something you've learned.
Weekend: Talk about it with your family or at church.
Even ten minutes at a time can create a meaningful rhythm of gospel study.
5. Use Additional Resources With Purpose
There are so many wonderful resources available for scripture study.
Videos.
Conference talks.
Artwork.
Study guides.
Printables.
Podcasts.
Commentaries.
The goal isn't to use all of them.
Choose resources that help you better understand the scriptures or make the lesson more meaningful for your family.
A helpful resource should simplify your study—not make you feel like you have more homework.
6. Keep a Record of What You're Learning
You don't need detailed notes every week.
Simply write down:
One scripture I loved
One thing I learned
One question I still have
One thing I want to do
Over time, those short notes become a record of your spiritual growth.
7. Talk About What You're Learning
Come, Follow Me becomes especially meaningful when scripture study moves into everyday conversation.
Share something you noticed with your spouse.
Ask your children a question at dinner.
Talk about a scripture while you're driving.
Mention something you learned to a friend.
You don't always need to gather everyone together for a formal lesson.
Sometimes the best gospel conversations happen naturally.
8. Keep Bringing It Back to Jesus Christ
With every lesson, ask:
Where is the Savior in this?
Even when you're studying Old Testament history, laws, prophets, wars, journeys, or covenants, look for principles that point you toward Jesus Christ.
What do you learn about His character?
His promises?
His power?
His relationship with His people?
Ultimately, the purpose isn't simply to know the scriptures better.
It's to know Him better.
You Don't Have to Do Everything
If there's one thing to remember about Come, Follow Me, let it be this:
Meaningful study is more important than completing everything.
Some weeks you'll study deeply.
Some weeks you'll barely manage a few verses.
Keep coming back.
Read.
Ask questions.
Notice what the Spirit teaches you.
Apply one thing.
And allow those small moments of scripture study to gradually bring you closer to Jesus Christ.
